چکیده

" It's B stars, stupid! " Abstract. In the currently-accepted model for star formation out of the interstellar gas in galaxies, the basic construction material is assumed to be large clouds of atomic hydrogen (H i). These clouds are thought to form higher-density complexes of gas and dust, and turn molecular (H 2). Stars then form out of this molecular gas. In this paper arguments are advanced for a contrary view, in which the basic construction material is cold molecular gas out of which the stars form directly. H i appears in the region when the leftover H 2 is illuminated with UV photons from nearby young stars. The physics of photodissociation regions provides a natural and quantitative explanation for the appearance of H i envelopes around the clouds, and for CO(1-0) emission from the higher-density parts of their surfaces. In this picture, much of the H i in a galaxy is a product of the star formation process, not a precursor to it.

The Production of H i in Photodissociation Regions and A Comparison with CO(1–0) Emission

The gas at the surfaces of molecular clouds in galaxies is heated and dissociated by photons from young stars both near and far. H i resulting from the dissociation of molecular hydrogen H2 emits hyperfine line emission at 21 cm, and warmed CO emits dipole rotational lines such as the 2.6 mm line of CO(1–0). We use previously developed models for photodissociation regions (PDRs) to compute the ...

The interstellar medium of the Antennae Galaxies

To study the properties of the interstellar medium in the prototypical merging system of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039), we have obtained 12 CO (1–0), (2–1) and (3–2) line maps, as well as a map of the 870µm continuum emission. Our results are analysed in conjunction with data from X-ray to radio wavelengths. In order to distinguish between exact coincidence and merely close corr...

Recent studies of nearby spiral galaxies suggest that photodissociation regions (PDRs) are capable of producing much of the observed HI in galaxy disks. In that case, measurements of the observed HI column density and the far–ultraviolet (FUV) photon flux responsible for the photodissociation process provide a new probe of the volume density of the local underlying molecular hydrogen. We develo...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

On the Origin of Anomalous Velocity Clouds in the Milky Way

We report that neutral hydrogen (H i) gas clouds, resembling High Velocity Clouds (HVCs) observed in the Milky Way (MW), appear in MW sized disk galaxies formed in high resolution Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmological simulations which self-consistently include gas-dynamics, radiative cooling, star formation, supernova feedback, and metal enrichment. Two disk galaxies found in cosmological simula...
